paz candles
Important Safety Information
Never leave candles unattended. If you are leaving a room where candles are lit, then you must gently blow out the candles (use a candle snuffer for highest safety) and make sure they are completely out before leaving the area.
Keep away from all drafts and vibrations. This prevents unintended dripping and fire hazards.
Only burn candle on a level fire-resistant surface. Burn candles for no longer than 3-4 hours per lighting.
Be sure tapers are upright in an appropriately-sized holder.
Do not let wick trimmings accumulate in wax pool.
Keep out of reach of children and pets.
How do I light a paz candle?
paz tapers come in pairs attached by a single wick. If you plan on lighting them, you must cut the wicks with scissors. Cut candle wicks to 1/4 of an inch (5mm) before lighting and relighting.
Trim the wick of each candle to 1/4 in (0.60 cm).
If the wick gets over 3/4 in (2 cm), snuff the candle, let it cool, and trim the wick to 1/4 in (0.60 cm) with scissors before lighting again.
Every time you relight, cut the wick down to 1/4 in (0.60 cm).
What size are paz candles and how long is the burn?
paz tapers are 14 inches tall (35 cm) with a standard base of a diameter of 7/8 inch (2cm). They last for about 9 hours.
The base size may vary slightly, since they are hand dipped and every piece is unique. If you find your candle holder to be too large, you can use candle adhesive or a small amount of wax in the base to adjust the size. If it’s too small, you can shave off some of the wax with a knife. Since every holder can be slightly different, these are easy adjustments to make.
Why beeswax?
There are many reasons why paz uses beeswax:
Beeswax candles don’t emit pollutants into the air when you’re burning them.
The burn is much slower and the flame more beautiful.
The light from the flame is the closest you will find to natural light.
These are a few reasons why we work with more challenging, yet higher-quality materials, like beeswax and natural dyes, instead of the paraffin and chemical dyes which dominate the market. In the spirit of creating a peaceful living space, we believe bringing a beeswax candle into your home is a better choice than a paraffin candle.
Why do we use natural dyes?
Natural dyes have been used for generations in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, where Paz candles are made. We produce incredibly vibrant colors without using chemicals. These dyes are made from natural materials like plants, fruits and insects. For instance, the cochineal, an insect that lives on nopal (prickly pear cacti), produces the vibrant red color that goes into our pink and wine candles. Our blue dyes are made from indigo.
Things to know about natural dyes:
Color transformation: Part of why we work in beeswax and natural dyes is because we embrace the ever-changing nature of the materials. Our wax starts out in the rich yellow we commonly associate with beeswax and morphs into white through sun exposure. Our wax slabs sit in the sun for two weeks to whiten. This means that not every candle is exactly the same. We love the unique and organic nature of this process.
Natural dyes are non toxic: Natural dyes don’t use the toxic chemicals that are normally used to control the process, but damage our environment.
Our dyes come from ancient formulas: The dyes and formulas we use are passed down through generations. Materials like indigo, cochineal, and lemons are used to produce paz’s vibrant natural dye colors.
How and where are paz candles made?
We make our candles in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, a small town known for its natural dyes, textiles and candles. Our process for making candles has been carried out for over four generations. Beeswax is bleached naturally by the sun to create white wax and natural dyes are prepared to dye the candles by slowly hand dipping and pouring the wax over the wick. This process can take weeks.
